The Maritime Security Identification Card is a national card. One MSIC, issued once, is valid at every security regulated port, harbour and offshore facility in Australia. Yet almost everyone applies because of one specific port: a new job at Fremantle, a contract at Gladstone, a transfer to Newcastle. This guide covers what is the same wherever you work, what changes from port to port, and where to find the local detail for each major Australian port.
One card, every port
The MSIC scheme is set by the Australian Government under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003. The background check is run by AusCheck, part of the Department of Home Affairs, and it is the same check no matter which issuing body you use or which port you work at. That means you never need a second MSIC because you changed ports, and you can apply before you know exactly where you will be working.
What is the same at every port
The application process does not change with your postcode. You apply online, prove your identity in person at one of more than 370 participating Australia Post outlets nationwide, and your issuing body lodges the application with AusCheck. What changes from port to port
Local rules sit on top of the card, not inside it. Individual port operators and terminals commonly require their own safety inductions, site access passes, vehicle registrations or booking systems before you can actually walk or drive through the gate. These are set by the operator, not by the MSIC scheme, so always confirm current local requirements with the port operator or your employer before your first visit.
New South Wales
Port of Sydney: cruise terminals on the harbour and Australia's second largest container port at Port Botany, with separate local arrangements across the two precincts.
Port of Newcastle: the world's largest coal export port, where rail connected areas can carry their own access rules on top of the card.
Queensland
Port of Brisbane: Australia's third largest container port, where port specific inductions commonly apply before first access.
Port of Gladstone: one of Australia's largest multi commodity ports, with additional site inductions and safety certifications around LNG and industrial areas.
Port of Townsville: North Queensland's major cargo gateway, with extra access controls around defence related areas.
Port of Cairns: cruise, sugar and reef fleet operations, where seasonal workers should apply well ahead of the cruise season.
Victoria
Port of Melbourne: Australia's largest container port, where regular commercial vehicle access usually involves local registration or booking arrangements.
South Australia

Working across multiple ports or offshore
If your work moves between ports, or you are heading to an offshore facility, nothing extra is needed on the card itself. The same MSIC covers every security regulated port and facility in Australia.
