Your MSIC is a national card. An MSIC issued by ClientView is valid at every security regulated port and offshore facility in Australia.
Ports North's own 2021 Port Handbook agrees that Karumba is not a security regulated port. Its per-port pages carry a "Security Level 1" notation that also appears on facilities that are not security regulated, so that notation on its own does not indicate a requirement. Read Ports North's Port of Karumba page.
Security regulated status can change. Confirm current access, induction and identification requirements with Ports North or your employer before your first visit, and check the Federal Register of Legislation entry for the port.
If your work also takes you to a security regulated port or offshore facility, an MSIC is required for unmonitored access to a maritime security zone there at least once each year (r. 6.07F(1)). Ports North does not issue MSICs. ClientView is an Australian Government authorised issuing body: the same card and the same AusCheck background check, one all inclusive price from $479.09 ex GST (ClientView published pricing, as at 18 August 2026), identity verified at a participating Australia Post outlet, and every ready application lodged with AusCheck each business day.
No Australia Post outlet offering the MSIC identity check is confirmed in Karumba, Normanton or elsewhere in the Gulf region. The nearest confirmed outlets are in Cairns (Australia Post outlet locator, checked 28 August 2026). The check can be completed at any participating outlet nationally. Current as at 1 September 2026.
Your MSIC and permission to enter are separate
Your MSIC shows you have met the background checking requirements. Your port or terminal operator controls site entry, inductions and access passes, so confirm them before you travel. AusCheck: apply for an MSIC

Job Ready lets you start your AusCheck background check before you have a job. We're honoured by the feedback, and it fuels our commitment to the service that keeps customers coming back: nearly 500 corporate accounts have renewed MSICs with ClientView (ClientView records: 497 corporate accounts with at least one renewed MSIC card printed, on applications lodged to June 2023).
Not for Karumba itself. Karumba stopped being a security regulated port on 15 June 2021, when the Notice of Revocation of Security Regulated Port, Port of Karumba (C2021G00435) revoked the 2016 declaration under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003, and the Far North Queensland Ports Corporation port operator designation was revoked with it. An MSIC is not required for access at Karumba itself. Many people based at Karumba still need one, because an MSIC is required for unmonitored access to a maritime security zone at ports and offshore facilities that are security regulated. At any participating Australia Post outlet, or through your employer's trained workplace verifier if there is one on site. Use our Australia Post verifier guide to find an outlet near home or work.
A Maritime Security Identification Card shows that you have met the background checking requirements for unmonitored access to a maritime security zone at an Australian port, on a ship or at an offshore facility. It is issued under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Regulations 2003, made under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003.
One all inclusive price covers the government background check fee, identity and document verification, lodgement and postage. The current prices for 2 year and 4 year cards are in the pricing section on this page.
Apply at least six weeks before you need the card. ClientView publishes its measured processing times, with sample size, period and full methodology, at msic.com.au/msic-processing-times, refreshed monthly.
Proof of identity documents, evidence of your right to work in Australia, a 10 year address history, and an operational need confirming why you require unmonitored access to a maritime security zone at least once each year (r. 6.07F(1)). We tell you exactly what to bring before you go to verify.
A written confirmation, usually from your employer, that your job genuinely requires unmonitored access to a maritime security zone at least once each year (r. 6.07F(1)). Without it an application cannot proceed. On our Silver and Gold levels we help you get it sorted.
No. Any criminal history declaration required for an MSIC is made to AusCheck, not to ClientView. As your issuing body, ClientView does not collect or assess criminal history. AusCheck advises us of the outcome only.
Renew before the expiry date to keep continuous access, since an expired card means no unmonitored access from day one. If your card is lost, stolen or damaged, apply for a replacement straight away.
We lodge ready applications with AusCheck every business day, and a local team answers the phone.
