What a renewal costs, and when to start

The two questions renewers ask first, answered with the basis for every figure and the regulation behind every requirement.

What a renewal costs

  • A renewal is priced the same as a new application: $479.09 ex GST for a 2 year MSIC and $774.55 ex GST for a 4 year MSIC, each covering the government background check fee, identity and document verification, secure lodgement and postage (ClientView published pricing, as at 18 August 2026).
  • Silver support adds $60 ex GST and Gold support adds $105 ex GST to either term (ClientView published pricing, as at 18 August 2026).
  • Registered post is $8.95 ex GST and is added to every card (ClientView published pricing, as at 18 August 2026).
  • Every figure here is ex GST. You will complete your renewal on our secure application portal, msic.au.

When to start

  • Start at least six weeks before your card expires. Most of that time is the AusCheck background check, which the government controls and no provider can shorten. ClientView publishes our measured processing times, with sample size, period and full methodology, refreshed monthly.
  • A lapsed card is lost work. You must not be in a maritime security zone unless you are properly displaying a valid MSIC (r. 6.07J), and an expired card is not a valid one.
  • You verify your identity again, in person. You must give the issuing body originals of your identification documents in person (r. 6.08BB(2)(a)), and r. 6.08BB(5) states in terms that you must give them again even if you gave the same documents to the same issuing body for an earlier MSIC. Your identity is verified at the time you give them (r. 6.08BB(4)). Australia Post is the standard route, or your trained workplace verifier if your employer has one.
  • You need a current operational need. An issuing body may issue an MSIC only if you have an operational need to hold one (r. 6.08C(1)(a)), which means your occupation or business interests require, or will require, unmonitored access to a maritime security zone at least once each year (r. 6.07F(1)). The Regulations do not prescribe the form of that evidence, so tell us when you start your renewal if your role or your employer has changed since your last card.

FAQs

Will you remind me before my MSIC expires?

Yes. We send renewal reminders three months, two months and one month before your card expires. If the card has not come back after it expires, we email you again 15 days later, and at 30 days we email and text you. Those are the last reminders we send, so it is best to post the card back as soon as it expires.

Are there any extra fees to pay at Australia Post when I verify my identity?

No, nothing to pay at the counter. Verifying at Australia Post is included in your card price, and every charge is shown before you pay.

No, there is nothing to pay at the Australia Post counter. Your identity check there is already included in your card price.

Details
  • Australia Post is our standard way to verify your identity. We cover that Australia Post service for you, so it is built into the card price, with nothing extra to pay on the day.
  • Not every outlet offers MSIC verification. Find a participating Australia Post outlet before you go.
  • If your employer is an approved MSIC verifier, they can verify you in house instead, and the card is a little cheaper.
  • Registered post is a small charge added to every card, and every cost is shown clearly before you pay, so there are no surprises.
  • If a Post Office clerk questions anything, our team can help on the spot. Email us at info@msic.com.au or call 1300 855 960.
When do I pay for my MSIC and does it affect processing?

You pay when you lodge your application, and it matters: your application does not progress to AusCheck background checking until payment is received.

Payment is made when you lodge your application, and it matters more than people expect: your application does not progress to AusCheck background checking until payment has been received.

If payment is outstanding, your application simply sits and waits, even if your documents and operational need letter are all in. Paying promptly at the time you apply is the simplest way to keep everything moving.

What address history do I need for my MSIC application?

A complete 10-year residential address history with no gaps, including the month and year you moved in and out of each address.

You need a complete 10-year residential address history with no gaps. For each address, record the month and year you moved in and out.

It is worth gathering this before you begin, because missing or incomplete address history is one of the most common reasons people stall part way through the application. If you have moved often or lived overseas, take a moment to piece together the full timeline first, then the form is quick.

How can ClientView's corporate portal streamline bulk renewals for my organisation?

The portal tracks every card, triggers bulk renewal workflows, lets you approve in one click and issues a single consolidated invoice.

ClientView's Corporate Portal lets administrators view all staff MSICs, set automated renewal reminders, perform in-house identity checks and lodge bulk applications with consolidated invoicing, dramatically cutting admin time and costs.

What happens if I don't return my expired MSIC within 30 days?

Keeping an expired card beyond 30 days is an offence (10 penalty units). ClientView emails you 15 days after expiry, and emails and texts you at 30 days.

Holders must return expired MSICs within 30 days or face a 10 penalty unit fine under r. 6.08P(1)(2)

Details
  • ClientView emails you 15 days after your card expires, and at 30 days we email and text you. Those are the last reminders we send.
  • Post the card back to ClientView at PO Box 3039, Mount Gambier SA 5290 as soon as it expires. If you no longer have the card, complete a statutory declaration instead and email it to info@msic.com.au.

How long is an MSIC valid for?

MSICs can be valid for either 2 or 4 years from the completion of the background check. White MSICs and certain categories of blue MSICs are limited to 2-year validity periods.

Regulation 6.08I(1) establishes the standard validity periods:

For white MSICs or blue MSICs applied for with 2-year validity: "2 years after the last day of the month in which the background check, undertaken when the holder applied for the MSIC, was completed" (6.08I(1)(a))

For blue MSICs applied for with 4-year validity: "4 years after the last day of the month in which the background check, undertaken when the holder applied for the MSIC, was completed" (6.08I(1)(b))

However, Regulation 6.08I(2) provides several important exceptions that may result in shorter validity periods:

  • MSICs for persons under 18 expire no later than 6 months after their 18th birthday or 2 years from background check completion, whichever is earlier
  • MSICs for visa holders expire no later than their visa expiry date
  • MSICs issued to ASIC holders expire on the same day as their ASIC
  • MSICs for crew of Australian International Shipping Register vessels are limited to 2 years Replacement MSICs expire according to special rules in Regulation 6.08L(3)
What if I legally change my name?

Notify your issuing body in person within 30 days, and provide proof; a new card will be issued.

If you legally change your name, you must notify your issuing body in person within 30 days and provide an original, valid document showing the new name

Details
  • The issuing body must notify AusCheck and issue a replacement MSIC.

What changes require a new card vs. update?

Major changes (name, operational need, loss/theft) require a replacement card; minor contact details can be updated.

A new (replacement) MSIC is required if your name changes (r. 6.08L, r. 6.08LCA), if your card is lost, stolen or destroyed (r. 6.08L, r. 6.08R), or you have an operational need for a different kind of MSIC.

Details
  • Changes to your address (for cards valid more than 2 years) must be reported (r. 6.08LD).
  • However, an address change does not always require a new card to be issued.
How do I maintain continuous MSIC validity?

Ensure your operational need and background checks remain current, and keep your details up to date.

To maintain continuous MSIC validity, you must have an ongoing operational need (r. 6.08C(1)(a)), keep your personal details current, and ensure your background check remains valid

Details
  • Your MSIC expires after 2 or 4 years from your background check, or earlier if you lose operational need, fail a check, or have changes in status (see r. 6.08I, r. 6.08M(1)(f)-(g), r. 6.08C)
  • You must return your card if it expires or you lose operational need (r. 6.08P, r. 6.08Q).
