Short answer
A Job Ready MSIC is a standard MSIC application that you complete and get approved before you have a maritime job. You apply, pay, verify your identity and complete the background check exactly as any applicant does, and ClientView lodges your application with the Department of Home Affairs in the same way. The one difference is the final step. Because you do not yet have an operational need, your card is approved but held rather than issued. The moment you are hired and your employer confirms your operational need, ClientView updates your application and issues your card, usually straight away, because the slow part is already done.

What a Job Ready MSIC actually is
An MSIC is a nationally recognised identification card that shows you have completed the background check required for unescorted access to a maritime security zone. It is not a security clearance in the traditional sense, and it is not a different type of card. A Job Ready MSIC is the same card as any other MSIC. Job Ready simply describes when you apply, which is before you have secured the job that gives you an operational need.
This matters because of a common catch. Many maritime roles expect you to already hold an MSIC, but a standard MSIC is only issued once an employer confirms you have an operational need to be in a security zone. Job Ready resolves that. You get everything done and approved while you are still looking, so you are ready to start on day one.
The only difference from a standard MSIC
Everything about a Job Ready application is identical to a standard MSIC application, with one exception. Under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Regulations 2003, introduced through the Transport Security Legislation Amendment (Job Ready Status) Regulation 2015, an MSIC cannot be issued to a person who does not yet have an operational need. Your application can be lodged, checked and approved, but the card is held until that operational need exists. Once you are employed in a role that requires unescorted access to a maritime security zone, the operational need is met and the card is issued.
The Job Ready process, step by step
- Apply online. Start your application and select Job Ready.
- Pay your fee. A Job Ready application is the same price as a standard MSIC. There is no surcharge.
- Verify your identity. You complete the same identity document checks as every MSIC applicant.
- ClientView lodges your application. We submit it to the Department of Home Affairs (AusCheck) for the criminal history and security assessment, exactly as we do for a standard MSIC.
- Approved, but held. Once the checks are complete your application is approved, but because you have no operational need yet, the card is not issued. This is the only point where Job Ready differs from a standard MSIC.
- You get the job. Your new employer confirms your operational need for unescorted access to a maritime security zone.
- Your card is issued. ClientView updates your application with your operational need and prints your card. Because the background check is already done, you can be ready to work quickly.
Who should apply Job Ready
- New entrants. If you are moving into stevedoring, transport, offshore or port work, an approved MSIC application puts you ahead of candidates who have not started the process.
- Students and trainees. If you are finishing a maritime course, apply before you graduate so you are ready for placement.
- Contractors between roles. Keep your position current so you can take the next assignment without waiting on a background check.
