A Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) is a nationally-recognised security identification card which is used in the maritime industry. An MSIC shows that you have been subjected to a background check and are, therefore, cleared to enter and work unescorted or unmonitored in maritime security zones of ports, ships, offshore oil and gas facilities, and similarly classified sites.
MSICs have a validity of 2 to 4 years, depending on the type of card you apply for.
A person is operationally required to hold an MSIC if his or her profession, occupation, or business interests involve, or will require him or her to have unescorted or unmonitored entry into designated maritime security zones within ports, on or around ships, and on and around offshore facilities, at least once in a year.
